The Truth about Pet Allergies
Compiled by Top Leading Immunology Veterinarians and Physicians
Pet dander is the loose skin flakes that the animal shed’s – just like humans! There is a myth that pet allergies are triggered by animal hair, BUT they are actually caused by a protein found in the pet skin (or dander), saliva and urine! Some dogs and cats are labeled as hypoallergenic as they shed less, but NO DOG OR CAT is 100% hypoallergenic! Even hairless dogs or cats still have some allergen. Let us say this as scientific research PROOF – EVERY ANIMAL is different, even in specific breeds!
Having one breed DOES NOT guarentee that if you adopt the same breed that you will have the SAME REACTION! Why, because there are MANY factors that contribute to the dander of every single pet!
DIET, TOTAL HEALTH OF PET, ENVIRONMENT INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY (INCLUDES AIR), PESTICIDES (USED FOR FLEA PREVENTATIVES, HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVES, YARD, ETC.) AND WATER QUALITY,
If your allergic and want to adopt a pet, consider the above factors when adopting the pet.
Things you can do in your home to help with pet allergies include:
1)Make your bedroom a pet free space and wash all bedding in hot water. Use a sanitizer in your bedding wash loads!
2)Use a HEPA air purifier/filter to trap dander
3)Install a high-effeciency filter on home climate control system to prevent dander from circulating throughout the home
4)Put web vent filters over register vents and change frequently
5)Remove all carpeting, cloth curtains, blinds from your home; these materials tend to trap animal dander and other allergens
6)Keep pets off furniture and/or cover all furniture with sheets or towels
7)If using a vacuum, be sure you are using a sealed system combined with powerful suction and HEPA filteration system (Ex: Miele Kona is ideal system)
8)Use Anti-Allergen Pet Shampoos that help neutralize dust mite and pet dander allergens
9)Install a high quality water purifier to your entire home water system
10)Keep your yard free of parasites by using a high quality pesticide every 4 months. A quality scheduled program with quality product with help greatly.
11)Keep your yard picked up of feces and urine. Many veterinarians suggest setting up preplanned graveled area with french drain system into a lagoon type composting system, as the area your dog should do his/her business rather than in your yard. For litter boxes make sure you are scooping daily and periodically totally not only replacing the litter but cleaning the entire litter box.
12)Discuss with your physician about your allergies and steps you can take to reduce your symptoms such as medication.
There are 4 STEPS TO TRUE CLEANING:
Cleaning, Sanitizing, Disinfecting, and Deoderizing! Make sure your product can do all these elements!
NOTE: Our professional experience and knowing the truth about pet dander has made our determination that if you want to know if you will be allergic to one of our adoptable pets, our adoption program is NOT for you! Simply meeting an animal for even half hour at a meet/greet, is not going to give any true results, even meeting an animal in our foster home program will NOT determine if the allergy person in your home, will react the same (in your home). Thank you.
